Graham Platner withdraws from Maine Senate race amid assault allegation
NPR reported that Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner filed paperwork on July 10 to withdraw from the Maine race after a former romantic partner alleged he forced her to have sex, an accusation he denies. The Maine Democratic Party has until July 27 to select a replacement, and AP said several candidates, including former state Senate president Troy Jackson, former CDC director Nirav Shah and others, have already announced their interest. With Platner’s exit, Democrats must quickly coalesce around a new nominee to try to defeat longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins in the November contest, a race seen as key to control of a narrowly divided Senate.
